Album Review: Ryan Broshear - Ryan Broshear

Have you ever listened to an artist and wondered “where did this guy come from?” Well, that’s precisely what happened when listening to Indiana-based singer/songwriter Ryan Broshear’s self-released and self-titled debut album. Working with the members from Joe Nichols’ road band to make the album, the record sounds as immediate and as good as anything you’d find coming out of major or indie labels in Nashville.

One thing to mention here is that Broshear may have recorded this album in Nashville but he didn’t get a string of songs pitched to him for recording. Instead he brought his own songs and quite honestly, he’s got a talent for songwriting that recalls Clint Black and Alan Jackson. Four of the songs are written by Ryan solely while the other six were co-written by his wife Amie. What we’ve got here folks, is a talented neo-traditionalist country singer (there’s no pop in this country boy’s writing or voice).

The record kicks off with “I’m Rich,” a terrific lyrical tune about a man who knows who he is what he’s thankful for in life. He may not be a rich man financially, but his life is rich in all other areas. “ Run For The Border” is a tune about escaping life to get away for a little bit (and has a slight Mexican melodic vibe to it). The thumpin’ “Let Your Redneck Out” may be another of the “country, backwoods life is great” but you know what, This is a life that is true to Broshear’s life and that of many of the folks from Middle America. It’s also a song that feels like a song that could be a big ole hit on country radio, right now.

Gifted with a voice that can recall 1990s stalwart Tracy Lawrence at times, Ryan Broshear showcases, like Lawrence himself, what a gifted ballad singer he is on “I Don’t Mind,” a tune which features the fantastic Julie Roberts on harmony vocals. This is a neo-classic ballad that is joined by “Right Here” as the standout ballads on the record. “Damn Good Place To Start” recalls the Mark Nesler song “Used To The Pain” melodically and somewhat lyrically. What it really is, regardless of what it sounds similar to, is a damn cool sounding song that must be a great part of his live show. “Along For The Ride” showcases Broshear’s talent for lyrics and melody while “Countrything” showcases everything Ryan Broshear is about. As the closing track of the record, it name drops his influences and heroes and while others have written and sang songs like this in the past, it’s always great to hear an artist state who he is and what he’s about with such conviction.

There seems to be a slight 90s country revival happening as of late with the success of songs from Chris Young and Easton Corbin along with success of other newcomers showcasing that they came up in the 1990s and while it may never be the #1 sound of the mainstream, Ryan Broshear is certainly a neo-traditionalist that deserves his own place right next to Corbin and Young and legends like Strait and Jackson.

iTunes Front Page

In March 2012 we made the top spot in iTunes with our new record on the "New and Notable" section.  Any artist strives to hit this page because it gives you top exposure to country fans all around the country.  I'm proud to have made it to this spot and hoping to make that the first of many albums to do so.

Ryan Broshear
RYAN BROSHEAR
Self-released
 4½ Stars

This is a real country album that is well worth savouring.
Ryan Broshear is a new name in country music and at the moment is releasing his own music, hopefully one of the big labels will sign him up soon as he is top class.
Vocally Ryan sounds very much like Tracy Lawrence, his music also is in the same league as Lawrence, Tracy Byrd, Mark Chesnutt etc. He writes his own material (including 5 co-writes with his wife Amie) and when recording this CD he called on the services of The Joe Nichols Band.
The opener I’m Rich is a great waltz tune with the pedal steel very prominent. Let Your Redneck Out is slightly rockier with his vocals totally true to country music. On the beautiful ballad I Don’t Mind he is assisted by Julie Roberts on background vocals making this a stand-out track, this would be a smash hit on American radio if given a chance.
Ryan is a very good and clever songwriter, even catching me out a bit on the song Where Have All The Good Girls Gone, because at the end of the song you realise he is talking about man’s best friend-his dog!
In a time where Nashville is swamped with pop singers who seem to think that they are country, it is actually nice to listen to a singer who is really country.
I just hope that Ryan makes it big as he is pure country class and definitely sings it like the heroes he name-checks in the final track Country Thing.

Citybeat Top 100

Ryan Broshear earns spot on

Cincinnati’s “Top 100 Local Music Releases”
The Year In Your Ear
The top 100 local music releases of 2011

“It was another ridiculously strong year for recordings by artists in Greater Cincinnati, making for another ridiculously hard-to-whittle-down list of the best releases from the past 365 days.
My master list for 2011 local releases, for the first time, easily reached 100. The fact that there were so many releases coming out of Greater Cincinnati in 2011 speaks to the increased accessibility and affordability of recording technology that has developed over the past few years. The fact that none of them were total garbage speaks to the wealth of talent in our music community. If you can’t find at least a handful that you really enjoy, then you simply don’t like music.”  Here is a link to the Citybeat 100 top releases of 2011

TLM Country in France

This is an album review from France on TLM Country:

RYAN BROSHEAR « RYAN BROSHEAR » - 2011

RYAN BROSHEAR « RYAN BROSHEAR » - 2011

Native from Ohio, Ryan's voice strongly resembles that of Tracy Lawrence's voice, the style is near James Lann, and he recorded this debut self-titled album with Joe Nichols musicians. Julie Roberts is background vocal, and the album was recorded at Curb Studios in Nashville. He is a songwriter and singer and has a twang in his voice which perfectly compliments his honky tonk-rock-traditionnalist's spirit. Note that Jonathan Yudkin arranged and performed strings which is always explosive. The reality is you need to tell Ryan that his album rocks. The big sound is perfected in his songs, notably « run for the border » which is very near the style of Justin Moore. Here is my last review for 2011, and a very big pleasure to finish this year. Here is my last piece of advice for 2011: buy Ryan Broshear's album !!! Very good !!! www.cdbaby.com/ryanbroshear

OXFORD — Talawanda High School graduate and country music artist Ryan Broshear is back in Oxford to perform songs from his self-titled debut.

Broshear is opening for Grammy nominee Gretchen Wilson in a show that starts at 9 p.m. today at Brick Street in Oxford.

Broshear’s album, which was released Nov. 17, is a thank you letter to his fans and those who have supported him since graduating from Talawanda in 1997, he said.

“I am thankful for the opportunity and gift that I was given in my life from God to be able to sing and write music and perform it,” he said.

After leaving Miami University without his degree to raise his daughter, Broshear took a shot in Nashville in 2000, he said.

“Times were tough then and I didn’t have anyone to financially support me when my daughter was born,” he said. “Had to grow up fast.”

For a time, Broshear worked as a used car salesman and looked for loose change in traded-in cars to afford lunch. He lost his electricity and his truck was repossessed while he was on tour. One night, he earned just $6 for six hours on stage at a Nashville bar.

The times were inspiration for his song “I’m Rich” on the new album. In the song, he wrote, “When the world gets too much to handle, I take a look at what I’ve got. My health, the love of my family — I put the rest in the hands of God.”

Amie Broshear, Ryan’s wife and best friend, is another source of inspiration and support for the singer.

“She inspired me to stop playing other people’s music and try to write my own music and try to chase my dream one more time,” Broshear said.

Broshear found his interest in country music at a very young age thanks to the influence of his parents.

“When I grew up, my father always had country music on the radio” Broshear said.

His mother gave him his first guitar, an old Yamaha acoustic, as a Christmas gift with a year’s worth of lessons.

He then had his first band at the age of 14.

Growing up in a family of hunters, Broshear is passionate about Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry. He wants to cooperate with them to raise a fund to help those people in need.

“It just seems to me ... as a country music artist, it ties closely in with farmers and hunters because they are a large demographic that makes up the country music fans. And I think it is just a way of using my gift of music to pair with them to help unfortunate people,” he said.
